The GRE maths sample question given below is a problem solving question in Ratio, Percent, Fractions. This GRE sample question is an easy question.
Question 2: In a certain year, California extracted \\frac{2}{7})th and Texas extracted \\frac{1}{7})th of all the Uranium ore extracted in the United States. If all the other states combined extracted 28 million tons that year, how many million tons did Texas extract that year?
Let U be the total Uranium ore extracted in the United States.
Uranium ore extracted by other states combined = 28 million tons
Uranium ore extracted by California = (\\frac{2}{7}))U
Uranium ore extracted by Texas = (\\frac{1}{7}))U
Uranium ore extracted by California and Texas combined together = \\frac{1}{7}) U + \\frac{1}{7}) U = \\frac{3}{7}) U
Uranium ore extracted by other states combined = U – \\frac{3}{7}) U = \\frac{4}{7}) U
Therefore, \\frac{4}{7}) U = 28 million tons → U = \\frac{28×7}{4}) → U = 49 million tons
Total Uranium ore extracted = 49 million tons
Uranium ore extracted by Texas = \\frac{1}{7}) U = \\frac{1}{7}) × 49 = 7 million tons
