Explanatory Answer | GRE Fractions Practice Question 2

Given Data

Let U be the total Uranium ore extracted in the United States.
Uranium ore extracted by other states combined = 28 million tons
Uranium ore extracted by California = (\\frac{2}{7}))U
Uranium ore extracted by Texas = (\\frac{1}{7}))U

Uranium ore extracted by California and Texas combined together = \\frac{1}{7}) U + \\frac{1}{7}) U = \\frac{3}{7}) U
Uranium ore extracted by other states combined = U – \\frac{3}{7}) U = \\frac{4}{7}) U
Therefore, \\frac{4}{7}) U = 28 million tons → U = \\frac{28×7}{4}) → U = 49 million tons
Total Uranium ore extracted = 49 million tons
Uranium ore extracted by Texas = \\frac{1}{7}) U = \\frac{1}{7}) × 49 = 7 million tons

Choice B is the correct answer
